Could contract work be an emerging practice?

An opinion:

When I started this company, it was because I saw there was a great demand for contract athletic trainers. Anything from part time positions at high schools, to coverage at club events on the weekend, or season long sporting events like Pop Warner Football. As I have delved further into this world of contract work, it has been revealed that this is a growing sector of work for athletic trainers.

But is there enough work to make a living?

I believe the answer to that question is yes. However, many of those opportunities are yet to be discovered.

In the time we have been doing business (a little over a year),  we have created 5 positions. These are positions where an athletic trainer was not already employed. In addition, we added 7 other contracts in which an athletic trainer already existed but upgraded the pay and/or work environment. With participation in athletic activities continuously increasing, performance institutes popping up on every corner, and age for specialization in sport becoming younger and younger, there is no shortage of work to be had by the athletic trainer. Educating clients and increasing awareness is of utmost importance in taking advantage of these opportunities. It is our (you, me, and my company) responsibility to embrace this to grow our profession.

We know we are the most versatile health care provider.

We know that the use of our expertise has only scratched the surface.

With our combined effort, we can capitalize on all the potential work that is available for athletic trainers. With steady progress, I believe contract/freelance work can become a common job setting for our profession.
