A study conducted by ESPN’s Outside the Lines and PBS’s Frontline proves that the NFL is reporting conflicting results in their concussion data.
In the words of a certified athletic trainer who tracks NFL concussions “the explanation of the discrepancies are ‘beyond ridiculous.’” (for more from this ATC, see his blog here: http://theconcussionblog.com/)
Some statistics (according to the article):
- 13% decline in concussions – according to NFL; however, according to the league’s brain injury specialists, this number did not include concussions sustained during the post-season or practices. With that said, there was only a nominal decrease in the percentage.
- Cleveland Browns: 27 reported concussions from 2009-now. (highest in NFL)
- Cincinnati Bengals: 0 reported concussions last year.
