In June 2017, the story on the partnership between ATvantage Athletic Training and Patty Curtiss of Athletic Health Advocacy first broke. As a follow-up, we wanted to share the latest updates on the new concussion protocols for Elk Grove Unified School District Sports.
As of last fall 2017, EGUSD began “implementing new policies and procedures across all high school sporting events with an emphasis on diagnosing and treating concussions.” With ATvantage handling Athletic Trainer (AT) staffing needs and Patty Curtiss as the concussion management specialist, this comprehensive partnership and their progressive approach is designed to protect student-athletes in a way that has not been done before.
The concussion policy and procedures have now been finalized with local resources for referrals having been identified and Sway Medical selected as the concussion management system. It has also been decided to further educate all academic and athletic staff while conducting baseline testing for all EGUSD high school student-athletes.
We hope this progressive approach will encourage all schools to take a look at their current policies and make any necessary adjustments, or seek advice from those who can help put student-athlete safety at the forefront. As this program and the partnership between ATvantage and Patti evolves, we will continue to keep you updated on any exciting strides.
